Thursday, April 25, SFMTA parking control officers, station agents, and car cleaners rallied outside SFMTA headquarters. They are still in tough contract negotiations fighting for a fair contract, and one of their priorities is making sure SFMTA workers are safe on the job — and have input into important decisions that affect their work.

SF RNs storm health commission meeting demanding safe staffing

Registered nurses with San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), Laguna Honda Hospital, and SF’s community clinics say tension is high, risk is up, and morale is low. They rallied outside of SFGH on April 23 against unsafe working conditions then boarded a bus to storm the SFDPH Health Commission meeting. They delivered 2,000 “assignment despite objection” forms documenting how short staffing is leading to serious risk to both patients and hospital workers.

SEIU 1021 members participated in the Bayview Hunters Point Peace Walk and Environmental Justice Rally on People’s Earth Day, drawing attention to toxic waste left by the U.S. Navy and its ongoing impact on community health.

Organized by All Things Bayview and supported by allies like 350 San Francisco and 1000 Grandmothers, protesters marched, painted a street mural, and engaged in poetry and dance performances.

Planned Parenthood Northern California workers unionize with SEIU Local 1021
Workers stood united in the face of anti-union intimidation tactics, with a supermajority signing cards

On Friday, April 12, a federal mediator confirmed that 77% of Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) workers signed union authorization cards to join SEIU Local 1021 and will be recognized as a union through voluntary recognition.

The mediator received 273 cards in support of forming a union, of which 245 were verified with signatures signed on or before January 22, for a 77% supermajority win.

Alameda Health System workers keep fighting for safety across the system

As their efforts to get a strong new contract with AHS management persist, AHS workers at Fairmont and John George Psychiatric Hospital rallied last Wednesday to protest the understaffing epidemic that has led to a serious safety crisis there.

Among the speakers was John George Psychiatric Hospital RN Handsel Meese, who spoke about being assaulted just a month ago when a patient got his hands around her throat. ”I could easily have been killed,” Meese said.
